Newborn Session Q & A ’ s

WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY NEWBORN PHOTO SESSION?
Newborns are best photographed up to 12 days old if you want to get that curled up, sleepy look they have in the first week but it’s not going to do any harm if you book a date when they are 2 or even 3 weeks old.
Really, it’s when you are ready! Don’t put pressure on yourself to get photographs taken too early, take your time to get settled with your new baby.
MY BABY HAS BEEN BORN ALREADY. AM I TOO LATE TO BOOK?
No. If you get in touch with me and have a date that’s just a few days away and I have availability, you can get booked in without any issues.
WHAT IF MY BABY IS OVERDUE, CAN I CHANGE THE DATE?
Absolutely, it is a simply postponing to a more suitable time for you and baby.
But both you and baby must be feeling healthy and up for the session. If you don’t feel like you are ready let me know and we can easily reschedule.
HOW LONG DOES A NEWBORN PHOTO SESSION LAST?
The short answer is 2-3 hours.
When baby is happy and sleeping, it is possible to finish a session in about 2 hours. But I follow baby’s lead and work around their needs to keep them comfy, happy and safe.
That means I always stop if needed for nursing or feedings. If baby is unsettled or cry, which does happen, the session will take a little longer as it’s often a matter of a feed or a cuddle and I’m not going to stop that when baby needs it.
If baby cries and no amount of soothing, changing, feeding and winding changes this we can simply reschedule your session as it may be that they are coming down with something.
More often, with some time, patience and perseverance all babies will settle and we will be able to create beautiful images — awake or asleep.
WHAT DO I WEAR?
HOW DO WE PREPARE FOR THE SESSION?
If baby is breastfed I advise the mama to avoid spicy/acidic/gassy food for 24 hours before the session.
Sometimes it is suggested to try to keep baby awake for as long as possible before the session and ready for a big feed on arrival, but we can work around the babies sleep patterns as they’re not always in a routine in the first weeks.
Please dress baby in something easy to remove and keep their nappy as loose as possible to avoid marks on their skin.
DO WE NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?
Just you and your baby.
Depending on the type of session (posed/lifestyle) depends on what I will use.
For a posed I will discuss the colours and styles you may like to have before the session and I have a few different props available to use and different shades of blankets and wraps to use too.
Lifestyle sessions are more of a simple just you and your baby with a few blankets and wraps keeping it light and natural.
MY BABY HAS SCRATCHED THEMSELVES/ HAS FLAKY SKIN / DEVELOPED BABY ACNE — IS THIS A PROBLEM?
Although it may take longer to edit out any marks from their delivery such as forceps, scratches from little baby nails or flaky/spotty skin this is all part of the newborn editing process and will be carefully removed during post-processing.
I will discuss with you when I meet your baby which elements you might want to show in the images and which you would want removing or softening.
I don’t like to over edit so that all details of the baby’s skin disappear but I will make the skin appear clearer whilst keeping their details.
ARE YOUR NEWBORN SESSIONS SAFE
Your baby’s safety is my number one priority.
I will not put your baby into any poses that they seem uncomfortable in or without following safety guidelines such as creating composites of images that look like baby is supporting their own weight (which they never will be).
I will handle your baby gently throughout and will not rush them at any time during the session.
Not all babies are comfortable in every pose.
If baby shows any signs of discomfort I would immediately disregard that pose, their safety and comfort come first.
I maintain a watchful eye on their colouring, circulation and breathing to always ensure they are perfectly safe and happy.
DO YOU EDIT THE IMAGES
During your session, I will likely take around 100-200 photos. This consists of numerous angles of each pose and often very similar images, re-takes due to blinks/eyes opening, focusing on different areas and so on.
Using my creative discretion, I only delicately edit the very best images including removing unsightly blemishes, colour correcting, detail enhancing and creative development to create the final portrait.
The online gallery that you receive will have, depending on the newborn package you choose 20 or 25 minimum fully edited high resolution digital images for you to choose the selected amount included in the package.
DO YOU SHARE THE IMAGES ONLINE
It’s always a privilege to do so, and I do love to share the beautiful images of your baby and family but only with your permission.
With your permission I offer options on how I can use your images such as website, social, promotional, competitions/magazines.
